Corona del Mar alumnus Sam Mikulak hopes to win gold in Rio

Before two-time Olympic gymnast Sam Mikulak, 23, made a name for himself in international athletics, he became a high college student to remember.

It was the first day of his senior year at Corona del Mar High School, and Mikulak’s English instructor, Laura Holk, was trying to grasp her students’ names.

“To help me act this, I asked each student to tell me something unique or humorous about himself or herself,” Holk said. “Most students gave me a standard answer, but Sam really surprised me.”

“Show her, Sam,” his classmates chanted.

Despite his humility, he gave in to the demands of the crowd. Holk gasped as Mikulak propelled himself into an effortless handstand.

Still upside-down, he paced the rows as his classmates reassured their teacher that this was perfectly protected and normal behavior.

Mikulak finished his introduction with a couple of backflips, and his name became one that Holk and her students would never forget.

      Who's gay in gymnastics?

It's agreeable to see that Paul Ruggeri's out and about. Eddie Penev's gay. I don't know how start he is about it, but he's not going out if his way to hide it. He follows a lot of gay Instahos. I consider he's cute, and yeah, he's quite the jet setter. Gymnasts get to travel a lot. I bet he's had tons of fun.

I'm in admire with Jake Dalton. He's so earnest and wholesome, and honestly, I touch no vanity from him whatsoever. He's beautiful, and I'm sure he's alert of it, but I never feel like he's flaunting it. I was sad when they moved. He left his really good friend Steven Legendre. They've gone through so much together in college and at different gymnastics competitions. But it's gentle that he's out west. He's closer to his family and will be taking over their gymnastics gym, so he's moving into that next stage of a gymnast's life.

I wonder how many more competitions Jake has in him. He doesn't perform all around and specializes in floor and vault, but is he aiming for Tokyo? It seems like this class of gymnasts are about to graduate and a recent class are going to come i
