In early May, the miniature city of Banning, California, hosted the Palm Springs Hot Rodeo. The match, which has occurred most years for the past 50, salutes the homoeroticism of rodeo culture. The four-day event—an official prevent on the International Lgbtq+ Rodeo Association circuit—features traditional rodeo events like steer wrestling and calf roping, along with more whimsical activities like a uncontrolled drag race, in which a person in performative rides a steer while their teammates guide it, and goat dressing, in which a pair efforts to put tighty-whities on a goat as rapidly as possible.

All events are open to any gender—men can barrel race and women can bull journey. “A lot of lgbtq+ people can’t be incorporated into the other rodeo world,” contestant Savannah Smith told me. “You can do whatever you long here,” she added, “and everyone here is supportive.”

This year, the festive event took place against increasing attacks on queer rights. Two days after the rodeo ended

Locals Strive to Revive the San Diego Gay Rodeo

Stop by The Loft on 5th Avenue on a Saturday afternoon, and you might find Andy Siekkinen in a cowboy hat and a red rodeo sash, carrying a platter of Jell-o shots. Don’t be fooled by his understated demeanor and quiet smile—Siekkinen is royalty. Gay rodeo royalty, that is.

This year, Siekkinen was the first runner-up for Mr. International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA). In the past two years, he won the distinctions Mr. Golden State Gay Rodeo (GSGRA) and Mr. Palm Springs Hot Rodeo. Despite all these titles, he’s relatively new to the nature of rodeo.

Siekkinen grew up on a dairy farm in Ohio, but he had never ridden a horse until three years ago, when he learned about gay rodeo and started development to compete. Now, it is a central part of his life. And those red and green Jell-o shots he’s hawking have an important role to play—Siekkinen is raising funds to revive the San Diego Same-sex attracted Rodeo, a once-raucous annual event that hasn’t taken place in 14 years.
