Turkish capital Ankara bans all homosexual rights functions

The announcement is likely to increase concern among homosexual activists in Turkey that their rights are being curtailed under the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP), which is rooted in conservative Islam.

Proving you're gay to the Turkish army

Some people in Turkey say with resentment that gay men are actually fortunate, as at least they have one possible route out of military service - they don't have to disburse months in the barracks, or confront the possibility of being deployed to fight against Kurdish militants.

But for openly gay men, being can be far from easy.

It is not uncommon for employers in Turkey to question position applicants about their military service - and a pink certificate can imply a job rejection.

One of Gokhan's employers found out about it not by asking Gokhan himself but by asking the army.

After that, he says, he was bullied. His co-workers made disrespectful comments as he walked past, others refused to speak to him.

''But I am not ashamed. It is not my shame," he says.

Ahmet is still waiting for his case to be resolved. The army has postponed its decision on his pink certificate for another year.

'Kill the gays' posters stir up Turkish capital

Quoting a verse from the Hadith - a collection of sayings of Prophet Muhammad - unauthorized posters appeared across Ankara on Tuesday, prompting passersby to "kill whoever does the ugly business of the people of Lot, whether he may perpetuate it or lets it happen."

An Islamist group acknowledged as the Young Islamic Defense claimed responsibility for the campaign, saying it was trying to "respond to the immoral actions" of lesbians, gays and bisexuals - equating them to the inhabitants of Sodom during biblical times. Though attracting criticism from LGBT groups globally, the campaign drew online back from likeminded people within Turkey who lauded the campaign.

Twitter user Yusuf Ensar Caliskan said: "I support this welcome initiative by the Young Islamic Defense group. We include to protect our brothers."

Other proponents of the poster campaign revealed their willingness to become part of a violent Islamic movement within Turkey. Genc Mucahide, or "young mujahedeen," tweeted that he acknowledged the Young Islamic Defense movement
