Tevin Campbell says he’s embraced identity as homosexual man

Former R&B child actor Tevin Campbell has opened up about his sexuality, confirming that he identifies as a gay man.

In an interview with PEOPLE, the s heartthrob acknowledged for the hits ‘Can We Talk’ and ‘I’m Ready’, said he “didn&#;t hide anything” about himself or “didn&#;t try to act a certain way or anything&#;, but noted &#;You just couldn&#;t be [gay] back then.&#;

He said his personal journey with his sexuality began in the late s after his music career stalled.

“When I came out to my family and friends [at] about 19 or 20, that was it for me. And then I went on the road of discovering myself. I didn&#;t know who I was,” Campbell said.

He said he has embraced his identity and is at a happy place in his life.

“What makes me happiest right now is how far I’ve come in life,” he said. “You know, there are a lot of child stars that don’t make it. But a lot of us perform … and the proof that I’ve embraced me.”

Picture this: It’s and Tevin Campbell’s single “Can We Talk” has broken into the top ten of the pop charts and is peaking at number nine on the Billboard Hot . On top of that, the song spent three weeks at number one on the US R&B chart. But, while those lyrics about a man serenading a woman were heard around the country, the singer was struggling with his attraction to men.

This is a problem that Tevin Campbell is NOW talking about with the public. In a new interview on the PEOPLE Everyday podcast, Campbell confirmed that he identifies as a gay man. Campbell also shared that what made him open up to his fans is the fact that he&#;s comfortable with himself now.

“What makes me happiest right now is how far I’ve approach in life,” he said on the podcast. “You know, there are a lot of youngster stars that don’t make it. But a lot of us do …  and the truth that I’ve embraced me.”

Last year, Tevin Campbell quote-tweeted a upload that said, “My mom keeps telling me Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass, and Tevin Campbell were gay,” adding the phrase “Tevin is” along with a rainbow flag and a sunglasses emoji, according to Out magazine. But then Campbell deleted the tweet, which led to some confusion. Now the R&B icon is ready to talk about it all on his terms. Campbell’s sexuality had been a topic of discussion in the past, leading him to previously deny organism gay, reportedly telling the former publication Sister 2 Sister, “I’m not queer , but there’s a lot of different things that I do like sexually,” and “Being in the business, you are introduced to a lot of different things. I’m not gay, but I’m a freak, and I assume a lot of people know what a freak is.” The rumors began in part due to Campbell’s arrest for soliciting “lewd acts” from an undercover policeman. Now Campbell has officially come out on the People Every Day podcast.
