True Blood actor Joe Manganiello has revealed why he is such a staunch fighter for LGBTI equality.

&#;I had to watch my friends endure challenges not experienced by the straight community,&#; he said last weekend in Seattle while accepting the Ally for Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign.

Manganiello shared how he saw friends in school fight with their sexuality and having their families not agree them and later he saw friends struggle in the job market or live in secret.

&#;I&#;ve never had to suffer any of those difficulties myself but somewhere along the way I decided to open my huge mouth and employ my platform to fight for all of the people to feel free to be who they are no matter where they are and be able to distribute their life and love with whomever their heart sees fit to love.&#;

He added: &#;I choose to combat for a planet where equality is a reality, not just a dream.&#;

Sofía Vergara is sharing more insight into her split from Joe Manganiello.

About six months after the "Magic Mike" actor, 47, and the "Modern Family" luminary, 51, filed for divorce, she set the document straight on what led to their breakup.

"My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn't crave to be an ancient mom," she recently told Spanish newspaper El País. "I feel it's not fair to the infant. I respect whoever does it, but that's not for me anymore."

And Vergara—who shares son Manolo with ex-husband Joe Gonzalez—noted she's ready for a different chapter.

"I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I'm ready to be a grandmother, not a mother," she continued. "So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children. I'm almost in menopause; it's the instinctive way of things. When my son becomes a dad, let him deliver the baby to me for a while and then I'll give it back to him and go on with my life; that's what I have to do."

The Religion and Political Views of

Joe Manganiello was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and raised in a Mt. Lebanon, a suburb just outside the city.

Manganiello was raised Catholic and attended a Roman Catholic elementary school.[1] And apparently the former altar boy[2] believed what the nuns told him, at least for a while. He wanted desperately to become a werewolf and he was pretty sure God would make that happen. He said,

I went to church every morning at 6 a.m. praying that God would turn me into a werewolf. I'd heard as a little kid that if you pray hard enough and your faith is pure, God will answer you. But after a few weeks of praying with all of my heart, it wasn't happening. So I started thinking there wasn't a God, it's all a giant gyp.[3]

Now that he plays a werewolf on the TV show True Blood, Manganiello says he jokes with the show's creator that he's brought him back to Jesus.[4] But he's joking. And it looks like laughing about religion is one of his past times. He follows and retweets quotes from The Tweet of God like this one:

True Blood's Joe Manganiello proud to be a gay rights ally

In receiving an Ally for Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), actor Joe Manganiello said he was proud to be an ally to the LGBT community.

Manganiello received the award at Saturday's 15th annual HRC Seattle Dinner held in downtown Seattle.

The year-old Manganiello is best known for playing werewolf Alcide Herveaux on the HBO supernatural drama True Blood.

"You know, I never set out to be an advocate," Manganiello told the crowd. "I'm simply a person who believes in equality for everyone. And I'm a person who believes in standing up for his friends."

"Today I choose to fight for a earth where equality is a reality, not just a dream. And above all else, to ensure that in the eyes of the law we're all equals."

"And I am truly humbled and awed by your collective commitment and I am extremely pleased to stand by as your loyal ally."

He said he felt a bit "weird" in accepting an award for his views and supporting his friends.
